8 years since I met my first friends in China

8 years since I met my first friends in China

Time flies when you’re a Lunatic.  I first arrived in China on December 6, 2006 for an 8 month contract as an English teacher.  Three days later, I went to my first English corner.

Someone asked me about my favorite Chinese foods.  I mentioned how much I love wonton soup.  After some confusion and debate, it turns out I needed to be asking about yuntun soup.

That’s when a lovely pair of Cantonese girls invited me out for soup at one of Donguan’s oldest and most famous little hole-in-the-wall restaurants.  The name of the place translates to Eternal Fragrant Garden, and they make an excellent bowl of wonton soup.

We ended up becoming great friends then, and I am very pleased that both are still among my very dearest friends today.  Even though they aren’t related to each other, I refer to the pair of them as The Cantonese Twins.  Individually and together, the two of them have always helped to keep my life in China extra crazy.   Each year, I try to take them out sometime around December 9th to celebrate.  Since that ended up on a Tuesday this year, we decided to do it on December 6th instead.

The original plan was for my beautiful wife and incredibly beautiful daughter to come to dinner with us.  Sadly, my daughter didn’t want to go out that evening, so the two of them ditched me and stayed home.

Ah well, dinner with my pair of crazy Cantonese Twins is always entertaining.  Eventually, we ended up at a Thai place and stuffed ourselves silly.  Maybe next year I think we’ll go back for more wonton soup at Eternal Fragrant Garden.

Escaped Lunatic

I've been fascinated by China for as long as I can remember. I took a teaching position in Dongguan in 2006-2007 and fell in love with the people and the country. I packed up and moved to China in 2010. I got married to a lovely Chinese lady in 2011. I got my Chinese green card in 2018. For me, life in China is a fun adventure. I hope you enjoy reading about it.
